Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV Japanese: ファイナルファンタジーXV Hepburn: Fainaru Fantajī Fifutīn? is an open world action role-playingvideo game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One home consoles. The game released worldwide on November 29, 2016, and is the fifteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series. The game features an open-worldenvironment and action-based battle system similar to the Kingdom Heart series and Final Fantasy Type-0, incorporating the ability to switch weapons and other elements such as vehicle travel and camping.
Final Fantasy XV takes place on the fictional world of Eos. All the world's countries—bar the kingdom of Lucis—are under the dominion of the empire of Niflheim. Noctis Lucis Caelum, heir to the Lucian throne, goes on a quest to retake his homeland and its magical crystal after it is seized by Niflheim on the eve of peace negotiations between the two nations. The game shares a thematic connection with Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy, a subseries of games linked by a common mythos which includes Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0.

Gameplay

Final Fantasy XV is an open world action role-playing game where players take control of main protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum during his journey across the world of Eos. While accompanied by his three companions Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, Noctis is the only character directly controlled by the player: he can navigate through simple movement, jump over small obstacles, sprint for a limited time, and perform context-based actions such as taking cover behind objects. The world is a large connected landmass that can be explored on foot, or by using the party's car "Regalia" or chocobos, recurring galliform birds in the Final Fantasy series. Both the Regalia and chosen Chocobos can be customised by the player, and Chocobos can join in battles if their connection to the characters is strong enough. While Chocobos are controlled manually, the Regalia can be either manually or automatically controlled. The party can also fast-travel to areas unlocked on the world map. The Regalia must be refueled periodically at petrol stations. In towns the party can visit, there are inns and hotels where they can stay, shops where items and equipment can be purchased with the in-game currency gil, and local tipsters,non-playable characters (NPCs) who provide information on quests, from main story missions to side quests. Side quests are also available from individual NPCs found in towns. During some story sequences, dialogue choices appear for Noctis, with the selected option altering the response from NPCs.

Battle system

The Active Cross Battle system in action: Noctis attacks a hostile soldier in one of the game's open environments.

The game uses an action-based real-time battle system, dubbed the Active Cross Battle system. Instead of using a menu interface, the player selects commands directly mapped to buttons on the controller, such as "Attack", "Defend", "Magic", and "Item". Battles take place within the current environment rather than transitioning to a separate arena, and can range from open plains to enclosed building interiors. When approaching enemies, a threat meter appears on the top of the screen, growing in intensity the closer the party gets to the enemy. When the party gets close and attacks or is spotted, the battle begins. Running away from enemies and out of the combat zone in normal battles ends combat. During battle, each character has health points (HP), and Noctis also has magic points (MP). HP is depleted whenever a character is attacked, while Noctis's MP recovers over time when not in combat when not using associated abilities such as warping or special weapon skills. The maximum HP cap decreases if all HP is lost, with some enemies such as Daemons able to lower the HP cap with their attacks. If all HP is lost, the characters enter Danger Mode, a brief period where a revival item must be used. If Noctis is defeated, the game ends.

FFXV Genesis
Painting titled Genesis, that depicts the world's origin myth.
Noctis Lucis Caelum, scion of a lineage of kings and the heir apparent to the throne, hails from the kingdom of Lucis that holds the world's last crystal, beneficial to his country's military, political, and economic standing. Because of its increasingly apparent industrialization in contrast to neighboring nations and the ensuing political tensions, Lucis has isolated itself from the rest of the world behind a magic barrier maintained by the king.
At one time, all countries possessed a crystal, but many lost them due to wars waged between them. They thus pooled their resources into weapons and machines, developing into technological civilizations in contrast to Lucis's magic-centered society. A cold war has gone on between Lucis and the rest of the world about the use and possession of the last crystal, and saw the nations outside exacerbate tensions among one another. It led into conflicts and debates over having the power to match that of Lucis, leading to the rise of the empire of Niflheim that united the many warring nations under its banner. In the wake of the new reign, a recent peace treaty with Lucis was proposed to finally diffuse the situation.
Throughout the world, legendary and great beings known as Astrals exist in various regions regarded as the protectors of their environment and the manifestation of the powers of the stars onto the planet. Through the powers of the royal family of Lucis, and presumably the crystal, kingdoms have gained their pact through their conduits of astral shards that allow them to manifest into the world. Their existence is said to be tied to the deities of the world and played a role in the creation of the planet, although the Astrals themselves are mostly indifferent to the affairs of humans.
A global phenomenon known as the "Plague of the Stars" envelops the world into lengthened nights. Those known as Oracles have long protected the world from the plague, and their nation of Tenebrae bears a wider degree of political autonomy in the wake of Niflheim's dominance due to their vital historical and religious influence. The current Oracle, Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, is the youngest Oracle in history, and carries on the task of preventing the world from plunging into complete darkness with her powers.
Final Fantasy XV Main Cast

Main Characters
  1. Noctis Lucis Caelum - The sole playable character and main protagonist of Final Fantasy XV. A childhood affliction endowed Noctis, heir apparent to the throne of Lucis, with the mystical power to see a heavenly light, through which he can sense others' deaths. Noctis rejects rigid royal conventions and acts as somewhat of a renegade, much to the dismay of those who tend to him. Yet while "Noct" may act brash at times, he does so in defense of those loyal to him.
  2. Ignis Scientia - Ever the unwavering voice of reason, Ignis was weaned on shrewd logic and a classical education from boyhood so that he might one day counsel the would-be king, Noctis. He applies the deep mutual understanding and trust they have built over time to help smooth over Noctis's brusqueness with others.
  3. Gladiolus Amicitia - As lord of the noble House Amicitia, Gladiolus continues a line sworn to protect the crown. "Gladio" shares a friendship with Noctis that transcends birth and title, and his loyalty to his liege is born not of duty, but of brotherhood.
  4. Prompto Argentum - The puckish playboy Prompto befriended Noctis in his school days. He wears a chip on his shoulder as an outsider to the royal circle, but remains eager to do all he can for the cause.
  5. Lunafreya Nox Fleuret - Luna made many fond memories with Noct in their childhood, but their days of innocence ended abruptly when the empire overtook her home of Tenebrae. Through adversity, she became the youngest Oracle in history. Adored and respected the world over, she now travels in search of communion with the gods to aid Noct on his journey.
  6. Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII - The reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Lucis, Regis raised his son, Prince Noctis, on his own. For long years, he has sustained the Wall, a magical barrier that encases the Crown City, protecting it from invasion. However, tragedy would befall him at the treaty signing with Niflheim, during which he was reportedly slain.
Guests
  • Cor Leonis - A living legend of Lucian lore, Lord Commander Cor Leonis's devotion to the art of war is surpassed only by that to his king. Little love is lost between the ill-starred stalwart and Noctis's retinue, yet honor binds him to keep watch over the group all the same.
  • Iris Amicitia - Gladio's little sister and long-time friend of Noctis and the others. She fled the Crown City during the empire's attack and has taken refuge in Lestallum.
  • Aranea Highwind - Imperial airborne division commodore known for captaining a distinct red aircraft as well as a squad of mercenaries. Even in hand-to-hand combat, Aranea is most at home in the skies, wielding a magitek lance in dragoon-style aerial attacks.
Supporting Characters
  • Cindy Aurum - Belle of the body shop who handles the day to day business while her cranky grandfather tinkers away in the garage. Cindy is an accomplished mechanic herself, and assists Noct and the gang’s trusty car, the Regalia.
  • Cid Sophiar - Outspoken old friend of Regis who owns and operates the Hammerhead garage. Although he’s getting on in years, Cid remains the master mechanic he was when he travelled alongside Regis thirty years before, and beneath the surly surface beats a warm and gentle heart.
Niflheim Empire
  • Iedolas Aldercapt - Emperor of Niflheim. Iedolas has used the empire’s superior airship and magitek armor technology to mount an aggressive campaign of territorial expansion, only to suddenly offer Lucis a peace.
  • Ravus Nox Fleuret - Older brother of Noctis's betrothed, Lunafreya. He currently serves the imperial army that once invaded his home of Tenebrae.
  • Ardyn Izunia - Chancellor of Niflheim. Ardyn rose to power by introducing magitek infantry to the ranks of the imperial army, and has since amassed political power at the emperor’s side. An aloof manner shrouds the chancellor in mystery.
  • Verstael - Imperial researcher of Niflheim that created the technology of the nation's Magitek infantry.
